LIFE EXPECTANCY OF A 2300 HR / 3208-T

Wiersema_Theodore_E (Employee)

Ultimately this depends on the total fuel that has been consumed by the engine over its life. There is a strong correlation between total fuel consumption and the time for overhaul. However..............time itself can wear through rust, acidity, plastic deterioration, etc. . 2300 hours at full throttle would have a different effect then 2300 hours of light cruising at 20% load. Typically in a non-commercial sportfishing boat you might see 200hrs of use per year with less then 10% at anything near full load. Based on the age and the great unknowns of such an engine i would have a dealer take an oil sample, boroscope a cylinder bore....maybe drop a rod bearing.....with this type of work you should have a good idea of where you are at in regards to life expectancy....my suspicion is that your engine has a long life remaining, but there I will not be the one 50 miles offshore with a storm bearing down on you...............

SOMETHING ELSE I FOUND
Caterpillar had came out with the 1100 medium truck engine in the 1960’s which became the 3160 marine engine. it suffered from weak “bottom end” problems also. In marine use, it also suffered from a design flaw of the camshaft driven gear that sometimes resulted in the gear spinning on the camshaft during a prop-strike. When Caterpillar came out with the 3160’s successor, the 3208, they improved the strength of the “bottom end”, but like the 3160 it still had the camshaft gear flaw.

+
See Predecessor: Caterpillar 3160
The original caterpillar 3208 diesel engine was a 225hp, 636 cubic-inch capacity V8 design. It did not have cylinder liners, but many engineering companies would re-bore the blocks and fit oversize pistons and rings rather than throw the engines away. (They were known as “throw away engines,” which the makers claim was one of the design criteria.)
The 3208 emerged in 1973 as a turbocharged version but in 1981, major design mods such as stronger internal rotating parts, three-ring pistons, and beefed up oil and water pumps. The cooling system was also upgraded to include a bigger heat exchanger and seawater pump to cool the engine oil, exhaust manifolds, and turbochargers with the expansion tank and thermostats also being modified.
It was used in many applications but soon became a firm favorite with the yachts and pleasure boats fraternity, with the larger vessels having twin turbo-charged engines fitted.
Unfortunately, the engine was a bit of a gas guzzler and failed to meet the new internal combustion exhaust emission laws which were due to come into force in the new millennium; therefore it was discontinued in 1999.

Originally produced in 1975 through a collaboration between Caterpillar and Ford, the Cat 3208 diesel engine was extremely popular through its entire production run, which lasted into the early 1990s. The engine was used in heavy trucks, including tractor trailers, garbage trucks, school buses and construction equipment. The engine was also used in power plant and marine applications. Use of the engine was widespread and its performance was reliable; as a result, many 3208-equipped vehicles remain in service long after production of the engine ceased.
Configuration
The 3208 is an eight-cylinder, four-stroke diesel engine with a V-8 configuration. It has a 114.3-millimeter bore and a 127-millimeter stroke. Different variations of the engine weigh between 722 and 899 kilograms. The engine displaces 10.4 liters. It has a cooling system capacity of between 47.3 and 56 liters and a lube oil system capacity of between 12 and 15 liters.
Power
Three versions of the 3208 engine have varying power ratings. The version with the lowest power produces 210 horsepower, the mid-range version produces 375 horsepower and the most powerful version produces 435 horsepower.
Compression Ratio
The compression ratio for the 210- and 375-horsepower versions of the 3208 is 16.5:1. The compression ratio of the 435-horsepower version is 15.5:1.
Other Details
The 3208 has a forged steel crankshaft, and early versions had a cast iron camshaft, which was replaced with a steel camshaft in later versions. Both turbocharged and non-turbo versions of the engine were produced.

Caterpillar 3208 – The Throwaway Engine to Keep
written by: Willie Scott • edited by: Lamar Stonecypher • updated: 7/15/2010
Although its original concept was a cheap throw-away engine, the Caterpillar 3208 engine has been used for many applications. Perhaps the most popular application has been to power marine craft, where it has proved to be a reliable engine, with some boats clocking up thousands of running hours.

32 feet, Pete.3208's with blowers. the high horsepower versions. I think the port engine had some electrolysis on the oil pan. The scupper drain under the engine was stopped up and let water lay against the pan. It corroded through at the bottom where the water was when it had water against the oil pan. The engine will have to be lifted up almost out of the engine room to install a new pan. It turns over but I won't let it start because it may damage the crankshaft if it starts without oil in it. Both engines spin over but I won't let them start until I have time to inspect them for fuel leaks and oil leaks. Both engines have very LOW hours on them. If my brother can come over to help, I will start them and replace the portside pan. The starboard engine has a fuel leak at the fuel pump and on one of the fuel lines. I just had to get away from working on them when my health went to hell. Now that I am improving I am looking forward to getting back to work on the boat. Tomorrow I go in for another test to see how well I am coming along. I feel pretty good and hope the doctors agree and let me get back to working on my boats and all of the other work I have laying around.

32 feet! Pete, I tried a quick reply but tit didn't come up in your window. so much for that idea. No trailer, the boat is to big to run on the highways. It is over 12.6 wide and is very tall even with the flybridge off. I had to get a professional with a big rig to move it. He took a chance and got away with moving it on a Sunday early morning to avoid permits and tickets. That was his call. I stayed out of the way. It nearly took out a couple of overhead lines and traffic lights. The trailer was a triple axle lowboy. Here is a photo of the boat on the trailer if I can find it.

Dave, my Friend, you are welcome here any time. I will always make room for you the same as I would for Pete, John, Don; My WW2 Hero down in Mexico, or any of my other brothers and sisters in this Treasure Hunting, diving, fishing, world in arms. B) If things get hairy or go psyco with these "demonstrators" I will have a safe house you can depend on going to. Being able to get off the land and head out to dive, fish or just get away from it all, is a great way to spend some time with friends and not have these outlaws tell you what you can or can not do. I have been a warrior for most of my life and am to old to change now. I am a diver, treasure hunter, explorer and will be that way until I am roasted and scattered among the fishes and treasure ships of the blue Caribbean to guard it from those who would damage or try to destroy it. I would do everything I could to avoid a confrontation but will never back down nor will I allow any of my friends or family to be injured, attacked or any other kind of crazy stuff that these fools are doing as long as I draw a breath. My brother, Stanley has a large ranch in east Texas and always needs help to run it. He has a lot of cattle, horses and land. I have always figured that if this country turns into some kind of Socialist or Communist crap-hole I would always be able to go there if need be. We always have a great time there shooting all kinds of guns and burn up a lot of ammo just having a good time. There are some nice large ponds and good fishing across the ranch for recreational fishing and boating. I love shooting out on the boat with a few of my guns but here in southwest Florida things are changing for the worse as this craziness continues to get wilder by the day. My brother has some of the guns you would love to shoot. I like shooting some of the long range rifles. He even has some very long range toys that will impress any shooter. A 45/70 comes to mind. that is a lot of fun. My 30-30 and some others are also fun. Shooting is just plain fun.

I am getting some serious interference with my computer. I have a scattered bunch of pictures that look like they are trying to start up another web page. The picture is jumping all over and flashing like it is trying to put one picture over the one I am watching and typing on. I'm going to restart this and see if that fixes the jumping screen. This is very annoying. let's see if that fixes the problem.

Okay, that seems to have solved the jumping problem/ The screen is back to normal and I can look at it without getting a headache, I was getting the feeling of watching a topless girl running across a field of boulders jumping from one to the next with everything bouncing like a slinky going up and down a flight of stairs. . :woohoo:

Okay, Dave, I am back and the pooter is behaving like it is supposed to.

:( Real bad news, Y'All, Sherene was in a bad accident this morning on her way to her doctors office for a blood test. She is in intensive care at Blake Hospital at this time. She was t-Boned by a State Trooper in a hurry to get to a call. She was hit real hard, several broken bones, hip, pelvis, back, 4 or more ribs, lacerations to her face and left arm is badly busted up at the shoulder. Stitches across the side of her head and the doctors are working on her right now. She is in a lot of pain and having a lot of trouble remembering anything at this time. She can't remember the accident or anything leading up to it or much since. Her head is busted up real bad and she has cuts and abrasions on her face, scalp and everywhere you look. This is not good. I got a few photos of the car but she refuses to let me take any of her. I will have to run to my Cancer appointment in the morning but I should be done by 11;00 and back here to the hospital by noon visiting hours. No one is being allowed to visit her as of yet. She is in the hospital undergoing tests right now. I don't know how fast the cop was going but it threw her car over 100 feet from the impact point. The cop carried on through the intersection about another 150 feet before being able to stop his car. That big cattle pusher on the front of the cop car did a real bad number on Sherene and her car. I was heading over to the doctor to see what was keeping Sherene and saw her car at the intersection. I pulled over and the cops tried to make me leave but I told them that was my wife's car and I wanted some answers as to why it was all smashed up. I called her phone and found out she was already in the hospital with many broken bones and other injuries. The car looked like they had to use the Jaws of Life to get the door open. The cops won't give me any real answers. I can not go to the hospital tonight. They don't allow visitors until noon tomorrow and I also have an appointment at 7 in the morning. and another at 10;00. I should be to the hospital by noon. I think they will have to give the car back no matter how bad it is. I called and Sherene wouldn't talk because she said the doctors were working on a bone. I will be there by noon tomorrow. The cops towed her car away but I want it back. It is a total but I may need it to have it diagnosed to see what the cops were so worried about.

Don't mind the broken sentencing, I am not to steady right now. Here are a few shots of the car. I'll have to put them in one at a time and come back to edit more in.

She is hurt real bad. Several broken bones and lots of head injury, facial cuts and such. She refused to let me take her photo. I will sneak my body cam in tomorrow and see if I can get a shot or two.

Any prayers would be greatly appreciated. She is really in bad shape. Her shoulder blade is also broken as are some we don't even know about yet. The doctors are getting her ready for CT scans and MRI's. All I know is they are concerned and that worries me. Usually they say it will be alright but this afternoon they said they have a lot of tests and scans to do before they can say anything for certain.

B) Ahoy Everyone, !!! What John says is true 100%. I was busy with tending to Sherene and working on the problems with her injuries. She has 9 broken bones and several other injuries that are very painful and debilitating. She is seriously hurting and needs to be in the Trauma unit at Blake hospital for a considerable time before they are going to release her. I have to deal with that and now the police. I'll get into that shortly but they are pulling some underhanded tricks with her accident and I am not letting them walk all over her. She has a mountain of trouble standing in front of her to protect her from these idiots. That's me, and they seem to think that she is stupid or that I am not paying attention to them. They have a serious problem facing their attempt to railroad her and blame her for the accident. Mean and ornery trouble is still my middle name. More about that later. I will ask for prayers for her recovery from these injuries. They are quite serious. Her memory is completely gone from a little while before the accident to waking up in the hospital later in the day, She was hit very hard. I mean VERY HARD!

Sherene's car,

I went in for my regular testing this morning and it came back clean for the 3rd test in a row. I have another test scheduled for June 29th at 7:30AM. If that one comes back clean like the last three have done I will be put on a once a month blood test for 6 months to watch for any possible flareup or warning of the cancer returning. If those 6 months of tests come back as clean as the last three I will be reduced to one every 6 months just to keep an eye out if the cancer does return. Meantime, I am besides myself with Thanks and prayers of thanks to everyone that has been praying for me and helped me get through this. I was told going into this experimental program that I definitely had a terminal case of Multiple Myeloma that was going to win sooner or later. When I went in this morning I was expecting to hear the same thing but the doctor had been holding back with the good news in case I did have another flareup or the new procedure wasn't working as well as they thought. I had the attitude of beating this cancer from the very first day I found out that I had it and wasn't taking failure as an option. I believe that, along with many thousands of prayers from my many friends from the many churches and even the strangers that included me in their prayer gatherings has helped immensely. I have no doubt that without that support and my friends that I would not have reached this point. Now don't get me wrong, this could turn bad again. This type of cancer is notorious for sneaking back when the doctors think it is gone. I am not going to back off. I will continue to go in for monitoring and testing for the rest of my life. No quarter asked and none given!

Ahoy Dave, 2 hours after Sherene got to the hospital right after the wreck, she was just being evaluated and checked in and three State Troopers showed up asking her a bunch of questions. Some guy heard them and went in to her room to tell her not to answer any questions and get a lawyer. He said the cops were not supposed to be questioning her before she saw her doctors and was admitted or had a chance to get an attorney. When I found out they had started questioning her even before she saw a doctor I asked my neighbor, who was a cop, what should we do. She said get a lawyer and don't talk to the cops. Since they were the ones involved in the wreck there is supposed to be an impartial investigation from an outside investigation group. Even I know they can't be trusted to investigate an accident involving one of their own cruisers driven by a young cop on call. I want to see the dashcam video. One cop called and said the cam showed Sherene running a light. I drive that street crossing several times a day. It is a very wide and clear approach and cross traffic is visible for over 250 feet in all directions. If she did pull through the light he would have been able to see her from a long way off. She was in the center lane going into th center median crossing when hit. Had the cop been doing the posted speed limit and paying attention even someone pulling through or even into the 301 traffic could easily be avoided. They have since called several times telling us all sorts of crap and trying to get her to admit fault in the wreck. One cop that said he was an investigator said he spoke with her yesterday morning and she said it was her fault and was sorry the trooper was injured. HORSESHIT!!! It has got to be on the cops dash cam so why do they keep harassing her? Anyhow, I called a lawyer that my neighbor recommended and he said to refer any questions to him and he would take care of her. The cops never mentioned anything about her not having to answer questions while she was so bad off and can't remember anything and they have just been feeding her answers and harassing us. She does not remember the wreck or even the day before. She has no idea why she was out on the road at 6:45 in the morning or where she was going or why. I know where she was and what she was doing. She was going to the clinic across the street to get a blood test. I had spoke to her about 5 or 6 minuits before the wreck. I always ask if she wants me to take her to her doctor appointments. If she has tests that will leave he feeling bad she has me to take her. This was just a simple blood test that her doctor orders every month or so the keep an eye on her health. Nothing out of the ordinary, I was getting bloodwork two or three times a week and it had nothing to do with my ability to drive. the cops are saying she was impaired or drugged. Nope, She takes a blood pressure med and a heart med. Nothing that would impair her driving. Now, if they said I was impaired, ...... Nah, I have a caretaker here if need be. If Sherene had felt unsafe to drive she would have had Karrie or I driver her. She has had me drive her a few times if she even had a headache. I know her, if for any reason she felt unsure or unsafe to drive, she wouldn't drive.

Sherene, is still not doing well. Her memory and recall is not working at all. She called here this morning 16 times with the same info and requests. She is going to go through another heart surgery in the next few days but I am not sure exactly sure when. She is on a clear liquid diet and swears the hospital has not fed her since she got there. the nurses say different and that she has been told that having hard food in her system if she is run in for emergency surgery would create more danger to her and her recovery. She doesn't understand nor does she believe them. She keeps asking me and her daughters to bring food, Cigarettes, her pain meds and other stuff she can't have. She keeps on me that I am trying to keep her from coming home because I have 5 dancing girlfriends living in my closet again. It would be funny if I thought she was joking but she is very serious. Her brain has been damaged and may take a long time to heal. If it ever does. I am more worried about her mental status than her broken bones and facial cuts and such. Sooner or later her bones will heal. The doctors say that all of her breaks will likely heal without surgery but if any look like they are not healing he will have to go in and repair them surgically. I am wishing she doesn't have to go through any more surgeries.. She has had 4 open heart surgeries already in the past 6 or 7 years. Hopefully, she will begin improving real soon.

I woke up this morning with my feet so swollen that I couldn't stand. I have been in bed all day with my feet propped up but it hasn't done much good. My feet hurt like the devil but having them elevated has not helped today. I don't know what could be wrong but if it doesn't clear up by Monday I have an appointment at the cancer center again at 9A.M. I just hope it isn't due to any of the meds I stopped. This is the first day I haven't been able to go up to visit with Sherene. I have been there every day since this happened but she doesn't remember it.

I was thinking of grabbing some bait out of the freezer and going out fishing for a few hours tomorrow morning. If the swelling in my feet goes down tonight I might just do that and hide from everybody for a few hours. Both daughters and two grand daughters are here now. I am down to a crippled truck and they have another crippled truck. Without the car I am running my 9 MPG monster Ford Super Guzzler. That is a lot of gas to buy every day when we need to get something from the store. BUMMER!!

:( Sorry Y'All but the last three weeks have been Hell to say the least. I am running into one disaster after another. I thought everything was going good when they said it looked like I beat a terminal cancer. I am still fighting the accident and now have the added issue of the lawyer we ....no, I hired has not returned any calls, we have not heard anything about anything we are supposed to do, Sherene was issued a ticket for failure to stop and yesterday the rental office called me to say I have to get the Hatteras out of the marina and the Coast Guard had said that it has to be hauled out.

Sherene is calling, I'll get back as soon as I can. She is having a lot of trouble with everything. Still can't walk, mind not working right and other things. Gotta run....

B) Sherene is still having a lot of memory and response problems. I am trying to find out where I put the registration and sticker for the Hatteras and both of us need to get away and take some time away from all of this craziness. She needs to relax and learn how to stop trying to do things. She tries to get up and has a great deal of pain in spite of being on pain killers stronger than I was on at the height of my surgery and radiation treatments. She forgets that she is hurt and starts on me to bring her car home and quit hiding it from her. That has only happened once but you see what I am up against. Meantime, I am trying to find the sticker and registration for the boat. Not happening, so I got online and made an appointment at Motor Vehicles for tomorrow morning at 9:30 to get them replaced. I renewed them July 1st and must have put them "somewhere safe". I may not ever see them again. I am getting as bad as Sherene. Maybe she put them up somewhere? I didn't put them on the boat because I wanted to hand letter the numbers back on when I put the name on. I don't know exactly where I want them just yet so I put the sticker and registration away someplace.

A friend called from south Sarasota and is coming up in the morning to help if he can. He has an engine problem on his fishing boat and was picking my brain for information but I couldn't concentrate so I asked if he could bring it up when he comes up to give me a hand and I can take a look at it. If I can figure it out we will take a test run out on the river. It sounds like an electrical issue with the starter solenoid or a fuse. power to the start solenoid but no start when he hits the button. I just happen to have some bait in the freezer and some ammunition waiting to break up some targets laying around. I have a couple of clay targets and my cowboy single six-shooters have been real neglected as of late. I wonder how long it will take for me to hit skeet with a six gun? Anybody can do it with a shotgun. Six guns make it a real sport. I do have my 12 gauge but it is for warning people not to stay on the boat when they board without permission. that cocking sound is understood in over 100 languages including Antifa and other similar terrorist dialects.

So, what would you suggest I do if the marina insists on trying to throw me out for something I didn't do? Or the coast Guard saying an oil slick came from my boat when there is no oil or fuel in the boat, no oil residue or oil anywhere in the bilge or engine rooms? I think they should have either had a first eye proof that there was oil in my bilge, which there was none, or done an analysis of both my engine oil, which does not exist, and the oil on the water in the harbor. How can they say I am responsible without any solid proof? I know from working on freighters and super sized commercial fishing boats that they have to have solid proof before accusing or charging a commercial vessel. I think it may be the same with a private yacht or fishing boat. I never heard of the Coast Guard demanding someone remove their boat from the water for anything short of major pollution issues. But even then they have to have proof beyond a doubt. No one saw who the guilty boat was. There was just oil on the water and it blew in around my boat and three others. I think I am going to demand physical proof that my boat did it. Prove it or go away! Ya think?

Oh well, I am through worrying about it tonight. I am tired and hurting. I'm going to put the bird up and go to bed myself.

I need to go fishing real soon....
