Sadly Chuck, the beach was a bust. More trash on these beaches than you can shake a stick at, and only netted about $.06 in change.

The Visa for my truck expires at the end of the month, and I have to drive it out of the country for a couple of days. Does anyone have any good suggestions for a good resort to stay at in Costa Rica for a few days?

Last night I drove over to the Balboa Yacht Club on the Panama Canal and I had the pleasure of meeting up with one of our TreasureWorks members who is on vacation down here in Panama. AlbyM and I meet at the bar for a few cerveza's, and we spent about 3 hours talking about the long and exciting history of this country, and of course lots of discussions about lost treasure and treasure hunting down here in Panama.

We agreed to meet up again later this week to head out and do some treasure hunting with our metal detectors, and see if we will have some luck uncovering more of Panamas rich history.

Yesterday morning I meet up with AlbyM, and we hiked part of the Las Cruces Trail or the Gold Road that the Spanish used to Transport their Gold and Silver mined in Peru across Panama to the Spanish Treasure Fleets waiting on the Caribbean side. Later this trail was used by the 49s bringing gold back from California to the east coast of the US.

This is not an easy trail to follow through the jungle, so between hiking up and down mountains, and swinging machetes through the thick underbrush and vines of the jungle during our nearly 12 hour adventure, I am in just a bit of pain this morning, and it's a little difficult to get around.

Tommy, a comment from one of the boys up North...

"It's so cold here, I scraped a brown spot off the mattress with a knife, threw it in the fire and it made a fart sound."

Enjoy the Heat!

Yea, I've been hearing that it's cold even in Florida this week, Bummer!. Just for the record, we are in the upper 80's to lower 90's down this way, and a couple of weeks into the dry season making the evenings a little cooler and quite comfortable.

J? Possibly Jesuit? Is that a possible indication of being close to something related to transporting church profits back to Spain? I really would like to be able to be there with you guys and have a chance to be walking the same trails and roads leading from the distant past. Does that stirrup look like something that could be old Spanish to you?

I'm afraid the quarter looks American clad.....

Sorry, it must be this Yankee cold that has dropped down here to my nice warm Florida west coast that has me dis-combubbalated and scrambling my thought box.

It was a pleasure to hang out with you in Panama last week, WreckDiver! You are a gentleman and a scholar. It's great to meet like-minded individuals and hear about all the experiences they've had exploring history and searching for treasure.

Yes, I was exhausted after our rather long and arduous hike to the old gold rush 49er and Spanish colonial site. I spent a couple of days getting over the aches and pains of it all. The combination of the humid climate, rough terrain, the long hike, ida y vuelta, and the actual hours spent detecting and digging out finds made it for a demanding day. :S

As you know, 4 days later I returned to the site with a buddy but was able to utilize a shortcut which cut off 3-4 hours of the hike. As a result, I was able to spend much more time detecting and made some decent finds, mostly from the gold rush era (1849-1855)- I found an 1849 "O" silver seated American dime in really good condition; apparently only 300,000 were minted in New Orleans. Some are saying it might be worth some bucks? I wonder how I can get an accurate rating and estimate of worth?

I also found a colonial mule bell (broken), some sort of buckle (or perhaps harmonica reed?), a brass horse bridle ring. and the usual plethora of Spanish and mule shoe nails. I have also attached a few mystery items in the next message - can anyone identify what they might be?

AlbyM, the pleasure was mine! and yes, it took me a couple three days to fully recover. How far back were you able to drive from the Kilometer Marker we looked at, and how far back do you think I could take the Blazer up that road?

I just looked your coin up online and came up with this link. You would have to take it in to a coin dealer for an appraisal to know for sure, but from this it's saying anywhere between $25 and $6,500. Outstanding!

Unfortunately, there was a tree down about 10 yards into the entrance near the kilometer marker we looked at. It still saved about half the trek to the site, at least. If you cleared the tree you could drive up the road within a few hundred yards of the site. By the way, I went up that "mountain" near the site with my detector, and only found a relatively modern shotgun shell.

I might bring the coin to Florida in February to get appraised when I visit for a work conference. Not sure I'll sell it unless it was an offer I couldn't refuse.

Spending the day today getting my gear cleaned up from the jungle hunts, and packing my dive and treasure hunting gear for the trip up to Costa Rica. I will be spending most of this next week roaming around that country following a couple of pirate treasure legends.

Panama requires that I can only have my car in country for 90 days total. I have to either pay taxes and register it in Panama and get a Panamanian drivers license or leave the country for at least 72 hours before I can return and start the process all over again. With that being said, I guess that's as good a reason as any to go exploring in Costa Rica.

In Costa Rica tonight, and tomorrow I will catch the boat to my next location. I will be spending a few days on Drakes Bay and seeing just what I am able to dig up.
