Divers scour the sea bed for treasure

by Norma Connolly

CAYMEN ISLANDS - Divers and snorkelers took the waters of West Bay on Sunday to hunt for treasure at the bottom of the ocean – and lots of them found some.

They were taking part in the annual Pirates Week Underwater Treasure Hunt hosted by Divetech.

The hunt was scheduled to take place at Cobalt Coast, but rough sea conditions meant it was relocated to Lighthouse Point, with the after-dive prize giving held back at Cobalt Coast.

Organizer Jay Easterbrook at Divetech said, “We had a total of 54 divers and 16 snorkelers – 70 participants – with lots of kids and everyone won a prize. Beautiful weather – whew!”

The treasure hunt, for which participants paid $20 each to take part, raised $1,400. The proceeds will be split between the Cayman Islands Tourism Association and the Pirates Week Committee.

Divers searched for coins that were dotted throughout the sand and reef and each coin won the diver or snorkeler who found it a prize.
