The Warley Swingers: Scott Gravenor, Simon Haley, Brent Scriven, Richard Riscoe and Andy Stewart
UK - A group of swingers have been making the earth move for people across Calderdale.
The Warley Swingers are a band of mates who go out metal detecting across Calderdale and further afield.
Since being formed last year they have uncovered many interesting finds but club member Brent Scriven said the most rewarding have involved reuniting people with lost jewellery and sentimental items.
“A lady pulled up while we were out in Selby and said she had lost her mum’s ring in her garden two years ago.
“She said the family had been on their hands and knees trying to find it and asked could we help,” he said.
“Her back garden turned out to be huge with horses in it. But within 10 minutes I dug it out. “She burst into tears and couldn’t stop crying.”
Recently Carl Robinson, of Burnley Road, Halifax, lost his wedding ring while gardening and called the group for help.
Again they found it within minutes. “He was ecstatic,” said Brent.
Another callout in Triangle solved a 10-year puzzle. A woman lost her mum’s wedding ring after giving a trowel a vigorous shake while gardening a decade ago. The ring flew off her finger and disappeared into the ground.
“She was made up that after 10 years we found it,” said Brent. “And because it was made of gold it was in pristine condition.
“It’s nice to be appreciated and to put a smile on people’s faces.”
Warley Swingers is now offering a free recovery service.
Simon Haley has been metal detecting for many years and has trays full of his finds.
Brent has unearthed a 14th-century livery badge and 2,000-year-old Roman coin, both in North Yorkshire. They scour sites with the landowner’s permission and if they ever strike lucky what is found is declared to a finds liaison officer for assessment.
It is usual for important finds to end up in museums with offers made to both the finder and the landowner.
