Putin finds ancient jars while scuba diving

RUSSIA'S action-man Prime Minister Vladimir Putin pulled on a wetsuit overnight and went scuba diving at the site of a Greek ruin - and found two ancient jars.

Russian news agencies said Mr Putin - a novice only attempting his third scuba dive - managed to discover two jars dating back to the sixth century during his expedition in the southern Russian coast near Ukraine.

The reports said Mr Putin had only descended two metres and discovered the objects in full presence of the media because the water was so clear.

Television footage showed two moss-covered vases with ear-like handles sitting neatly next to each other on top of the sandy bottom as Mr Putin swam into view.

"Treasure!" a dripping wet Mr Putin said with a big grin.

"They drank it all already," he said when asked if there was anything left in the jars.

"The head of the expedition said they are from the sixth century AD," Interfax quoted Mr Putin as saying. This would date them to the time of the early Byzantine era.

"When the ships were being loaded at the port, the jars would often break and then they would get tossed overboard," Russia's de-facto leader said.

Mr Putin's expedition took him to the Krasnodar region's Taman Peninsula - home to the Phanagoria colony founded by the Greeks some 2500 years ago and invaded by the ancient Rus in the 10th century.

Former Soviet intelligence officer Mr Putin rose to the presidency in 2000 on the back of a carefully-cultivated image that mixed nationalist rhetoric with a macho image that set him apart from other Russian leaders.

He has flown a fighter jet into Chechnya and descended to the bottom of Lake Baikal in a special deep-sea vessel. Russian media have published photos of Mr Putin wearing his judo black belt and stripped to his waist on a hunting trip.

One of his more daring escapades last year saw him chase whales off Russia's Pacific coast with a crossbow in hand.

"Living in general is dangerous," his office later quoted Mr Putin as saying at the scene. He later piloted a Formula One car on a circuit near his native city of Saint Petersburg.

Mr Putin's adventures at times contrast with the apparently more sedate lifestyle of President Dmitry Medvedev, who has yet to commit himself to a second term amid speculation Mr Putin himself may run in next year's elections.

The president has also encountered the occasional media mishap.

Mr Medvedev this summer nearly ran his SUV vehicle into a cheering crowd of supporters after forgetting to put the car into park and has also become the hit of a viral video in which he was shown dancing at a friend's party.

Mr Putin and Mr Medvedev have vowed not to run against each other and to decide which of them will stand for the presidency.

This was obviously a media stunt to promote Mr. Putin with the people of his country. The television cameras were already there showing the bottles as he swam into view to make the discovery? Come on!

Yea, just another typical politician, everything they do is staged. Trouble is people buy into the bull spread by these people.
To Swim Is Human, To Dive Is SUBLIME
To bag a bug in total darkness . . . . is just the next step.
