VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA - Giving crusty prospectors a run for their nuggets, latte-sipping Melburnians, as well as grey nomads, are taking up metal detectors, pans and picks in what traders describe as a "mini gold rush".

Bendigo gold trader David Watters said the past year had seen more families travelling to the region in search of buried treasure.

"With the price of gold so high, there's been a renewed interest in the hobby of prospecting," Mr Watters said.

"We've sold a lot more pans and parents are buying kids gold detectors to get them to ... have a go.

"There's a whole range of people coming through ... the dad has a fossick, the kids are running around."

He described the surge as a new gold rush.

"The price of gold is certainly driving it," Mr Watters said.

He said valuable finds were still being unearthed in the region, with a prospector recently finding an eight-ounce nugget worth more than $13,000.

"The little pieces of gold are always there. The old miners didn't get it all, and the guys prospecting now won't get it all," Mr Watters said.

A gold nugget worth about $500,000 was discovered in the Ballarat region in August.

Maldon gold miner Jeff Douglas said there was a tree-change among prospectors as "gold fever" swept Victoria.

"There's been some very lucky people around over the years who have just taken it up and gone out there on their second or third day," Mr Douglas said.

Bendigo mum Rachel Hunter said she and husband Ben bought a metal detector for the family to use on camping trips.

Now boys Riley, 11, and Joshua, 5, are expanding into gold pans and picks in their entrepreneurial new hobby.

"The kids love it, they find a few dollars and they think it's Christmas," Mrs Hunter said.

She said she'd noticed several other families around creek beds vying for a find.

"It's a great, rewarding hobby, it's good to get everyone outdoors and it's an interesting thing to get excited about," Mrs Hunter said.

Good story

With the latest technology in detectors. You can still pull a monster nugget in the region with a little luck. Back tracking thourgh the old mulock heaps of gold that was missed.

Here are some smaller ones discovered from a few years ago.
