The Knights of the Golden Circle (KGC) was a secret society of fervent Confederates who sought to add new slaveholding states to the Union. Their precursor, The Order of the Lone Star, was largely responsible for the annexation of Texas. The KGC sought to add Cuba, Mexico, Honduras, and several other Latin American territories to the USA. The group opposed the election of Abraham Lincoln and pushed for the secession of the South from the Union. Famous members included John Wilkes Booth and Jesse James.

The KGC allegedly hid vast treasures across the country, money that was to be used to finance the invasion of new territories. Money was collected from the selling of bonds (to be backed by the new territories), and also the collection of dues and initiation fees from members.

A new book, Knights' Gold, proves that a treasure trove of 5,000 gold coins unearthed in 1934 was actually the property of the Baltimore castle of the KGC.
