" Angkor, the ancient capital of the Khmer Empire, has been mapped for the first time using laser light.

The technique called LIDAR, which uses billions of reflected light beams to map the topography below a thick forest canopy, revealed that the city was even more massive than previously thought.

The new analysis "shows there were hundreds, if not thousands of settlements, mounds, ponds, roads and urban blocks which actually organized a quite dense city," said study co-author Christophe Pottier, an archaeologist and co-director of the Greater Angkor Project. "This area of dense occupation was much bigger than what we were expecting."

The findings were published today (July 8) in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Tommy, looks like LIDAR is definitely going to be the way to go. ;)

Dang it, if it just wasn't so darned expensive! :S

yep Judy, cost is always a concern. However, on the other hand it could also easily pay for itself in relative short order. I have not yet heard a cost for this setup and I'm not even sure that you can buy it yet.
From what I have read and seen on-line, it appears to be a semi-portable system that seems to be easily installed in a single engine aircraft.

B) Verrrrry Interesting! I want one as soon as they get as small as those cameras we send up in balloons. Hoisting a camera high above your anchored boat, campsite or mountain range seems like a good localizing search system. Could you immagine the possibilities? Run the balloon up to a few thousand feet and look all around your location. Awesome!!! :woohoo:

There's a whole lot more to it than just the equipment costs. The software uses massive amounts of computing power and memory. For what you and I would need it for, look to pay upwards of 1.3 Million. But....there is the possibility of buying 'Fractional" ownership and having it all......

Even the 1/16 ownership is a little pricey for just a couple weeks use per year :S

They won't say, you have to contact them. I'm sure there are lots of variables like location and length of rental.
