JUPITER, FLORIDA - Much like a box of buried treasure brought up from the depths of the ocean, the Shipwreck Bar & Grille in Jupiter is fascinating patrons with its extravagant nautical décor, museum-like displays and delicious menu.
The new family-friendly establishment on old Dixie Highway is a testament to the fearlessness of the treasure hunter and a tribute to a famed shipwreck in the waters off Jupiter Inlet Cove.
The Spanish galleon San Miguel de Archangel sunk in 1659, on its way from South America to Spain, as a ferocious storm churned through the Atlantic off the east coast of Florida. Of the crew of more than 100, a total of 33 survived.
The ship – and some of its salty sailors – are brought back to life in the restaurant’s spacious two-level dining-room area, where they peer from the upper deck of the ship and protect diners from pesky pirates.
“The restaurant is beautiful and has great atmosphere,” said Stephanie Kline, one of Waterfront Properties and Club Communities’ agents. “We wish all involved the very best success and can’t wait to return and bring friends.”
Scott Thomson is the brains behind the new establishment. Thomson, the captain of the SeaHunter excavation vessel, used his affinity for underwater exploration as the inspiration for the Shipwreck Bar & Grille.
Several of the San Miguel de Archangel’s coins are on display in the restaurant, along with other discoveries from the search site near Jupiter Island. Thomson has been involved with the San Miguel de Archangel project since 1987, when a federal court approved the claim for salvage. To date, more than 15,000 coins and bars have been resurrected.
Local flair inside the restaurant includes signs of Palm Beach County parks, businesses and places of interest, and tropical underwater decorations. Customers can walk through a miniature museum and get a quick history lesson on the ships that sunk off Florida. They also can browse the Shipwreck Bar & Grille’s gift shop and take home a Spanish souvenir.
As for food, Thomson’s specialty is seafood dishes that range from clams and oysters to crabs and lobster. A touch of traditional American fare is mixed in, including fish sandwiches, po boys, soups and salads.
Shipwreck Bar & Grill is open from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily and feature live music on the weekend at the outside bar. Happy hour runs from 4 to 7 p.m.
