Four treasure-hunters from Greece have been arrested while excavating illegally an Ancient Thracian burial mound near the village of Karavelovo, Yambol District, in Southeastern Bulgaria.
The four men were captured by the local police in the Tundzha Municipality after they were alerted by locals that there are digs at the Thracian burial mound not far from the Bulgarian crossing on the Turkish border Lesovo.
The four men from Greece are aged between 37 and 73; they had managed to dig down to a depth of 11 meters using shovels, pickaxes, buckets, pulleys, a rope ladder, and two metal detectors, the police said cited by BNR.
They confessed to the police that they had entered Bulgaria several hours before their arrest. The four men have been charged with treasure hunting, i.e. digging at archaeological sites without a permit.
